Metis Fellow, Founder of Second Chance Foundation

“My bold question is ‘What if young mothers were empowered to thrive’?

Through the Metis Fellowship Program, I founded and piloted the Second Chance Foundation to empower young mothers with skills and knowledge so that they are able to take care of their children to avoid the cycle of poverty. Our innovation is currently reaching 80 young mothers aged 15 to 22 from 4 counties who dropped out of school due to teenage pregnancy. They’ve been equipped with knowledge on contraceptive use, confidence to speak up and seek help, GBV referral pathways leading to the ability to seek justice and reduce violence and AIDS and other STDs.

Starting April 2024, these young mothers will proceed to either the Livelihood & Economic Empowerment track or Vocational Skills track based on needs assessment. Those completing the Livelihood & Economic Empowerment track receive $100 to start businesses solving specific problems in their communities. Those under Vocational Skills track receive apprenticeship linkage and connection to employers.”
